Our Gardens

Covering 11 glorious hectares, the Gardens consist of exotic species and the natural rainforest of Tamborine Mountain. Over 25 years, dedicated volunteers have developed this property into the highly-photographic boutique Gardens that they are today.

Nestled snugly in Tamborine Mountain’s majestic natural rainforest, Tamborine Mountain’s very own stunning Botanic Gardens is in a world all of its own far away from the hustle and bustle of neighbouring cities.

Many exotic species from all over the world thrive in Tamborine Mountain’s temperate climate creating spectacular botanic displays all year round, so no matter what time of year you may decide to visit us, all the seasons offer different viewing perspectives.

  • TMD – About Us

  • In 1992, we moved from Tasmania for a change of climate and lifestyle. We found this property with its many fruit trees on Tamborine Mountain, Queensland, and decided to settle. As we did not want to use chemical sprays on our fruit, we discovered that our products did not meet with market requirements. For a four person family, we had too much fruit, so we needed to ‘convert’ it into something which would make this small property productive. ‘Fermentation for the purpose of distillation’ was the goal – and so the small pot still was born!!

  • TMD – The Distillery

  • Hidden away in the Gold Coast Hinterland, is the Tamborine Mountain Distillery. This is Australia’s smallest operating Pot Still Distillery, but of world renown, including in Europe, America, Canada, New Zealand and Asia.
With the Combination of rich red volcanic soils and fresh Spring Water, the abundant fruit of the Mountain is fermented and distilled.
A small Pot Still is used to create the superb spirit which is the essence and foundation of Liqueurs, Schnapps, Vodka and Eaux de Vie.
Although Michael and Alla Ward’s Distillery has only been open a short time (July 1998) they have already established a very enviable reputation as creators of high quality liqueurs, vodkas, schnapps and eaux-de-vie. This reputation, largely developed by word of mouth, has seen people coming not only from all Australian states but America, Europe and Asia as well.

The Distillery’s products have won awards in America (Chicago, San Francisco) and Europe (London, Belgium, Germany, Austria).
The incredible range of fruit that is grown on Tamborine Mountain is a wonderful resource for the Ward’s to draw from to produce their variety of Liqueurs and Schnapps. The Distillery also receives a considerable diversity of fruit from other growers which they turn into beautiful, smooth, Schnapps, Liqueurs, Fruit Brandy, Gins and Vodkas.

The Wards have received nationwide coverage in the print media and national and international television coverage. In an endeavour to enhance the personal touch by being able to relate to small groups in telling their story, the Wards have deliberately made their driveway narrow to preclude bus loads of people arriving en masse.

    Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk More Information

  • Over 300 meters of structured bridge through the top of the rainforest canopy

The Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is owned and operated by the Moore family. Prior to the opening of the Skywalk the family spent four years in research and planning and finally in March 2009 a world-class tourist attraction, suitable for all ages, and showcasing the natural beauty of the rainforest reached fruition.

The walk is easily accessed as it departs directly from the centre’s Eco Gallery. This information corridor contains extensive descriptions and photos of local flora and fauna, interpretive panels, butterfly displays, insect dioramas and a fresh-water aquarium. Also of interest are descriptions of the evolution of Tamborine Mountain and local Aboriginal culture.

Featuring rainforest bio-diversity, all the levels of the forest can be explored during the walk –  from the delicate ferns and dense vegetation of the rainforest floor alongside majestic strangler figs and ancient trees to rare orchids and the spectacular panorama in the higher canopies. While crossing the 300 meter, steel-structured bridge and the breath-taking 40 meter long “Skywalk Cantilever” soaring 35 meters above the forest floor, the highest canopies are revealed and add an element of excitement and a rare opportunity to be actually up in the highest parts of the forest.

The total walk takes about 50 minutes although a dedicated nature lover may take a whole lot longer.

Other interesting features to be seen on the walk include a pioneer’s hut with a collection of historical farming implements used by the early European settlers, and photos of original residents and life on the mountain.

The Butterfly Lookout is a great place to stop and relax in one of the sheltered rest-stops along the way.  Hundreds of butterfly-attracting vines and shrubs have been planted by the Moores to attract and maintain diverse types of butterflies especially the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly which is prevalent between September and April each year.

Visitors have the option of purchasing light refreshments and snacks from the Skywalk’s Birdwing Coffee Shop, or some beautiful gifts and souvenirs from the centre’s gift shop.
